As a technology aware parent I’ve had to try and make up my mind on where I sit with my kid’s use of the internet and other ‘look at me’ technologies that are rapidly saturating the environment that I am bringing them up in. I think this video by Cory at TEDxObserver does a great job of explaining where I think I’ll end up with my kids when the time comes to teach them about privacy and technology.

New Windows Phone 7 Campaign

This has been doing the rounds on the inter-webs today. It’s an interesting take, and a cool campaign, but I think I agree with the guys over at mobilecrunch. While I’m guilty of having my face down far more than I should, especially around my kids, I think it’s actually because I enjoy it, not because the present phone UI metaphore is too clunky (not that it isn’t clunky though).

Many a Sci-Fi writer has a decent take on this phenomenon in the future with their stories of massively wireless interconnected minds and the way people stare off into nowhere with absent eyes when they are busy communicating.

Finally, a free (beer and spirit) tool to convert video to formats used by most of the devices I own that isn’t loaded with crapware, bloatware or spyware.

I’m downloading it as we speak. Am yet to try it, but it’s got to be easier than figuring out the command line fu needed to get VLC to convert video for my ipod.

Saw AVATAR the movie last night

Decent movie, incredible effects, even more-so in 3D. As impressed by the effects as I was when I first saw the Matrix so think I’ might be back to see it in 3D again.

Not too sure how I feel about the obligatory love story though.

Interesting primer video about the elements and principles of design and how the apply to software inteface components. Little long and sound quality is a little kitchen-esque but still some interesting concepts relayed relatively convincingly.
