Cool article that shows you how to get your regular USB charging device to charge those god damned Apple i-thingies.
Interesting post from a mono hacker about taking Test Driven Development to the next level, Documentation Driven Development. I like it, at least in theory. It definitely sounds like a great way to approach development from a mind-set perspective, if not actually from a practical perspective.
So a standard workflow looks something like this:
- Write guide for feature A
- Write unit tests for feature A
- Implement feature A
- Eat Burrito
- Write API docs for feature A
- Update tests with issuelets discovered while writing class docs
- Update feature A
Upgraded to WordPress 3 auto-style and then decided to upgrade K2 automatically too. The K2 upgrade nuked my stylesheet. So there’s been a slight hiccup with respect to my site style at the moment. I need to find the last backup I made, it was on the hard drive of the laptop that failed last month, and restore the site style. Should be back soon.
My personal laptop just died this past week and I’ve been assigned a desktop at the new place, so that means that I’m actually machineless at the moment.
I’m looking into a replacement as we speak, and right now it’s a toss up between an Acer TimelineX 4820T or a 13″ MacBook Pro. I’m basically going for rugged small form factor, large battery life, and great performance on power. At this stage the Acer is winning because it has a 1366×768 screen, but the aluminum body on the macbook pro is doing it’s best to sway my decision towards durability over screen real estate.
So for those that noticed the update to my About Me page, I’ve had my first week at Gruden.
It was an interesting and exciting first week, and hopefully a good indicator of things to come. Not much else to say except it seems like I’ll be working with a bunch of great people on a bunch of great technologies in the online space. Pretty much my cup of tea.

Or perhaps the title should read “End of my era… at ninemsn“.
It’s been three and a half fruitful, action packed years, and I’ve had an absolute blast, but like all good things it has to come to an end. Tomorrow is my last day as a ninemsn‘er. I’m blessed to be leaving behind an incredibly talented commercial development team full of fantastic people with tremendous energy who will no doubt easily fill the void I leave behind in a matter of minutes. I’ll also be leaving behind some fantastic co-workers in a vibrant workplace that is just generally a nice place to be. You’ll all be missed.
I’ll be starting my new role as the Development Manager at Gruden in a couple of weeks, and am incredibly excited about the opportunities that that journey will present. The guys at Gruden are a fun and energetic bunch, and something tells me I’m going to fit right in there.
In the mean time, I’m probably going to spend a week at home doing absolutely nothing (well gardening anyhow). This will be the first actual break between jobs in almost 10 years, I think.
Goodbye ninemsn, it’s been a great ride.
Finally, a free (beer and spirit) tool to convert video to formats used by most of the devices I own that isn’t loaded with crapware, bloatware or spyware.
I’m downloading it as we speak. Am yet to try it, but it’s got to be easier than figuring out the command line fu needed to get VLC to convert video for my ipod.
Moved to the new place and now I can’t seem to get SBS Digital reception at the new place (mythbusters and man vs wild are just too much to miss).
Turns out the house has an old style analogue antenna, and I’m getting oversignal interference from channels 1-5, and the only UHF channel it affects is SBS. Annoying thing is I can get the teacher’s channel and channel 44 (higher in frequency than SBS).
Just ordered a new Fracarro LPV34H, DVB-T antenna and hoping that will fix it.
Update: A Fracarro LP345HV actually arrived, but I installed it, and that did the trick.
I’m toying with migrating a friend’s HTML site built off a custom intractable CMS to Joomla.
I installed the K2, engine for Joomla just based on the fact that I use K2 for WordPress and it’s great. A weak reason to do so, I know, but one none-the-less.
It’s still too soon to comment on my initial impressions, but watch out for some opinions in true jba fashion as well as possibly a few tips also.
Okay, time for one opinion; the getting started guide is way to floral (in the literary sense) for a getting started guide. Found it incredibly annoying.
