Hi all,
As mentioned in I’ve updated the about-me-widget to be compatible with WordPress 2.9 changes. The changes I made should be backwards compatible to 2.8x too.
Download the latest version of the about-me-widget now.
Technically, I’m not particular proud of the things I had to do to get the plugin to work, it’s not the cleanest solution. But I even checked in with wp-hackers and the consensus there seemed to be that the work arounds are the most practical solution for now. Regardless, the plugin still works perfectly for end users, so download away.
It’s great that you’ve updated this to work in WordPress 2.9.x but it doesn’t work properly on my install of 2.9.1 with no plugins activated using the default theme – I can only input text if place the widget in Sidebar 1 – any other sidebar I put it in doesn’t let me add or edit any text.
Can you supply more detail? Are you talking about issues in the admin form, does the widget show and not let you type, or is it that the text typed doesn’t save?
The widget shows and lets me type only if it is in Sidebar 1, otherwise it looks like it is going to work but when I click on the text area no cursor appears and I can’t input any text.
I hope that helps you.
Hi Jeff,
Thanks for that description. I can confirm that I think this bug has always been there. I believe the issue is that the first time you add the about me widget to any sidebar it doesn’t accept text.
If you add the widget, then click save on the widget, and finally actually reload the entire widget admin page (click refresh in your browser) you should now be able to interact with the about me widget as per usual.
An annoying bug that I’d love for someone better than me at WordPress/jQuery to resolve, but for the time being you can use this work around to get it going.
Just installed your plugin from wordpress. Everything works fine until I save it. Then it all goes blank. I have a new 2.9.1 install of wordpress. Is this the compatibility you just corrected, and if so when should the plugin available from within wordpress be updated? BTW, this plugin fills a much needed tool gap in wordpress. Thanks.
Hi Philip,
The scenario you’re describing is a recurring one that we need to fix every time WordPress gets updated and it sounds like I’ll need to look it again.
To confirm this for me, can you please try the following and tell me what happens.
1. After adding the about-me widget to the side bar refresh the widgets admin page before trying to edit/save content. Does the issue go away now?
2. After re-sorting the about-me widget to the side bar refresh the widgets admin page before trying to edit/save content.Does the issue go away now?
3. After a fresh refresh of the widgets admin page, does the about-me widget work normally with respect to save/reload?
If you are experiencing, either of scenario’s 1 and 2 above, then unfortunately these are known issues yet to be resolved, due to the complexity of the widgets admin page’s AJAX set up. The work around is to follow scenario 3 above. Which is to always refresh the widget admin page before actually interacting with the about-me widget.
I will eventually look at fixing this, but am unsure if there is a practical solution to it.
If you are getting the same problem even after following scenario 3, then we have a version compatibility issue that will need to be updated again.
Thank you for your response. Refreshing the admin page after adding the widget resolved the problem I was having. After that everything seems to save and reload as expected. Thanks!
Hi,
I just updated to the last AboutMe version and now I cannot enter/save text. Before the update all was well – bummer.
I tried refreshing as described above.
Now my only hope is the updating WP one iteration helps.
the other solution of course might be a downgrade. can you give access to older versions?
You can get older versions by using svn to get at the tags of all the about-me releases at codex.
Updated to WordPress 2.9.2 and the plugin seems to be working fine for me.
