About Me widget working in WordPress 2.7
So I’ve been doing some spot cleaning in preparation for the new look and got side tracked making the rich text editor work in the about me widget on wordpress 2.7.
I thought I should share it with the rest of the world, so I guess I’ll add a zip file containing the widget to this post. The question is, do I go through all the effort of adding it to the wordpress plugin directory, and if so do I add it as a new plugin?
Download: About Me Widget for WordPress 2.7 (231)
Update: Make sure not to change the folder name in the plugins folder as there is a hard-coded reference to it as in this comment.
P.S. If you do download it, please leave a comment to let me know how it goes for you.
Final Update (20 Oct 09): I have updated this plugin to work in the new WordPress Widget API (as of 2.8.2). Rather than host the download here I have updated the plugin at the WordPress plugin repository. See this blog entry. For now, I’ve closed comments on this blog entry, please leave any comments in the new entry.
Not sure how those first 2 people downloaded it, but the link to your zip appears to be broken now
Sorry mate, looks like the mod_rewrite settings for downloads aren’t working. I’ve turned off the friendly URL’s so the download link should work now.
I downloaded it into my plug-in folder but it is not showing in the list of plug-ins on my blog.
Hi Gus,
The changes I made to Sam’s plugin were simply to enable it to use the new version of TinyMCE in WordPress 2.7. You should still be able to follow the regular plugin install instructions for the plugin and have it work as normal for you.
The editor window is not showing up in the design you widget below: box.
Hi Gus,
I’ve just de-activated, removed and re-added the plugin to my WordPress install and discovered that the plugin must be in the folder called about-me-widget, so that the actual folder path is:
wp-content/plugins/about-me-widget/
Unfortunately there seems to be a hard coded reference to that folder in line 41 of aboutme.php which means that the folder must be called that.
Also, if the text editor isn’t showing, then it’s probably because you are getting a javascript error. Can you check to see what that error is, as well as confirm your WordPress version?
Hi jba,
Thanks so much. I placed the plug-in the about-me-widget folder and got it to work. The text editor is now showing and I have it all set up.
Regards,
Gus
In the process of switching (back) to Wordpress again, and I really appreciate your tweaking this for 2.7

Thank you very much for sharing your work!
I have a strange issue where the edit part is always shown and if you click the edit button, you then have two sets of the edit form.
David
Hi Amy and David,
Would love to help get you over the line but need more information about your situation first.
Can you please provide what wordpress version you are using, and what screen in particular (admin ui, or actual blog page etc) you have loaded when you come to difficulties?
JBA
Thanks for you prompt reply JBA! I am using wordpress 2.7 and I uploaded it in the plugins folder and then wanted to activate it from the admin but could not find it in the list of inactive plugins to activate it from.. Though I got to activate the samuel plugin before.
Regards,
Amy Dyslex
Amy,
Just to confirm, this plugin uses the same identifiers (and indeed version number at this stage) as Samuel’s. It’s just an modification of his version to work with later versions of WordPress, so they can’t exist side by side.
Ensure you uploaded the plugin to the folder (as there is a hard coded script reference to that location):
wp-content/plugins/about-me-widget/
Once this is done you should be able to see the plugin called “About me widget” in your plugin screen with version 1.04 and referring Samuel’s web site.
I’ve been meaning to finalise the updates correctly and have been working with Sam to have a final proper release with a new version number. Just haven’t gotten round to it of late.
Worked like a champ! Thanks!
Hey a million billion thanks for your kind help. It was just a minor error. Actually I would suggest that the download link for the folder that you are providing should directly contain the about-me-widget zipped file. I zipped that folder n then uploaded it and BINGO its working now

Amy Dyslex
Hey thanks for your kind help
..The plugin is working great now at my widgets section… Now can you please tell me that how do I get it to show in my footer?
Hi Amy,
Sorry for the delay in response. As I understand it, the About me widget is designed as a widget that targets the sidebar. There are themes that have the flexibility to allow widgets to target other components (multiple widget-bars) and some of these might allow you to target the footer.
But I do believe that this is theme dependant.
As you can in my website http://www.writeawriting.com, the side bar has been customized to only show those widgets that are manually added in the template…what I needed to know is that, can you please give me the code to place this widget anywhere in the template, like the twit badge etc.
Thanks for the help so far,
Amy Dyslex
I’ve downloaded Samuel version and I can’t see the editor
This really help me! Now it’s alright
A small suggestion : can you add image frame inside?
Skipping my english, it’s not good.
Thanks alot!
Hi,
I have a problem on WP 2.7.
I guess I installed widget correct (exactly in wp-content/plugins/about-me-widget/). Then I activated it, moved to sidebar and it looks ok. The problem is that only ‘looks’ – I cannot use it because I cannot write anything. When I click on editor there is no coursor. I also cannot click any buttons. They are not clickable. I just only can add Title and press Save. But then it is not possible to switch back to the edit mode (which actualy is not ‘edit’ mode cause I cannot write
). Please look at screenshots that presents before pressing Save button and after that.

Hi from the look of your screenshot it looks like you’re having a javascript issue which is preventing you being able to actually type text into the text box. What browser are you using and are you getting any javascript errors?
Hi again,
so:
1. I’ve got this problem on FF IE6 IE7 and Opera. No script error.
2. I’ve tried on 3 different computers – 2xWINXP an one Windows 7
3. I have updated java from Sun
4. Today I just even install Apache/PHP/MySQL on my local computer to exclude any my hosting provider setup. Then I install WP 2.8.2
…still nothing.
Hi Tom,
I haven’t upgraded my Wordpress to 2.8.2, so I don’t know if it works using 2.8.2. Are you having this bug on both 2.7 and 2.8.2, or just 2.8.2?
Also this plugin doesn’t use java. It uses php and javascript. Worth looking for when debugging is if any requests for javascript files are failing (sometimes these don’t register errors in the javascript console).
JBA
FYI: This version doesn’t work with Wordpress 2.8. Will look to getting an update out soon.
oh do plz get version up for 2.8.2!!! i would be most grateful!
How is the progress going on updating the plugin to 2.8.2, actually now 2.8.4?
The widget API changed significantly in WordPress 2.8, mainly to provide things like auto-multiwdigets, and it looks like this has futzed the way the widget works in the sidebar.
I am looking into a complete re-write of the widget in the new API at the moment. As progress depends on how much free time I get to do it I have no real ETA at the moment, except to say I am currently working on it.
Thanks for the update.
It’s mostly there, I just can’t seem to find a way to get the html content out of the rich text editor in the newer simplified widget API.
Hey guys,
FYI, after some struggles with the changes to the widgets admin page I have a working version of the widget working in WordPress 2.8.2 and greater versions. I just need to package it up and distributed it. Should have it out over the weekend.
Hi guys,
Latest update is that I have updated this plugin to work in the new WordPress Widget API (as of 2.8.2). Rather than host the download here I have updated the plugin at the WordPress plugin repository. See this blog, http://jbablog.com/2009/10/about-me-widget-for-wordpress-2-8-x-or-embeding-tinymce-in-a-wordpress-widget/.
