So do I jump on board and take the crapy “iPhone only” plans that are being pushed by the Aussie telco’s with 3G iPhone’s at the moment just to get one as soon as possible, or do I stick it out and wait for the hype to die down and get a good phone on a good plan in about a month’s time?
Or do I even go the way of many a fellow geek and get one from the States and Jailbreak it?
What to do, what to do.
You can’t get a 2.0 phone in the USA without activating it on AT&T, so you’d need to pay USD$199 plus pay out a 2 year contract to get one. I’m guessing there’ll be a flood of second hand 1.0′s around though, and the best thing about the new phone is the Appstore, which you’d get with the old phone. Does this mean that the AU carriers are finally going to offer a decent data plan?
Optus (my carrier), is offering a $59 cap plan wich comes with 500MB data(up and down) and includes $300 of talk and text in the cap. On this plan you get the 8Gig iPhone for $2 a month on a 2 year contract, or 16Gig for $7 a month for 2 years.
The plans in themselves aren’t that bad, just that I’m currently out of contract on a decent business plan and don’t necessarily want to lose features just to pick up an iPhone.
Besides, based on the troubles Optus had sourcing the Nokia 6100 Navigator I doubt I’d actually be able to land an iPhone on contract for a while.
How can you call yourself a real tech head and even consider not getting an iPhone.
The only advantage of the new iPhone is 3G and GPS, so if you want to keep the plan then pickup a cheap iPhone 1.0 and you get the enjoy the best of all worlds.
So the reason I didn’t pick up a 1.0 iPhone is that 3G and GPS are two important features to me that I get quite alot of use out of with my current phone.
It’s these two features that I waited for before deciding to spend on the iPhone.
Besides, real tech-heads will be going for the Neo OpenMoko based system.
